Treadmill Maintenance: How do I Care for my Treadmill?

If you train at home with a treadmill, it is essential to pay attention to the maintenance of your equipment. Good maintenance will increase the lifespan of your equipment and ensure your safety during training. Generally speaking, treadmill maintenance is uncomplicated and easy to perform. Here are a few points to keep an eye on during your treadmill’s life.

Some treadmills may indicate when they are due for cleaning or maintenance on their displays. Ensure you check your operating instructions for further details of your individual treadmill’s requirements.

Treadmill Maintenance Guide

The following step-by-step guide covers general treadmill maintenance, which you can follow to keep your equipment functioning optimally.

Step 1: Checking the Treadmill Screw Connections

As with any mechanical device, you should check the screw connections at regular intervals to make sure they are secure. Tighten them if necessary.

The screws that hold the frame together need to be checked. You can find these on each side of your treadmill. The screws connect the rails to the foot rails and the frame. You should also check the screws that secure the handrails and the console.

If you have a treadmill with a folding mechanism, the connections to be checked include the screws of the folding mechanism. If your treadmill is folded up, you can also check the screws of the incline motor.

It is also important to note that you do not tighten moving elements that are joined together in joints too tightly.

Check the screws on your treadmill.

If these screws are too tight, the mobility of the joints is no longer guaranteed. You can occasionally treat these connections with a drop of silicone spray/silicone oil. This will help minimise squeaking or creaking noises.

Step 2: Lubricating the Treadmill Running Mat

Another important step in treadmill maintenance is lubricating the running mat. The mat directly contacts the treadmill’s running deck, creating friction that should be kept as low as possible. To lubricate the mat, please only use silicone sprays or oils approved by the manufacturer or available in our shop.

To lubricate the running mat, first lift it on the left side. Now, use the silicone spray/silicone oil to evenly apply a thin film of lubricant from bottom to top between the running mat and the running deck. Then, repeat this process on the right side.

To lubricate the running belt of your treadmill, use a silicone spray.

To ensure that this lubricating film is evenly distributed, run a few steps on the treadmill at a speed of 4-5 km/h. The slow and even load allows the lubricating film to spread optimally.

Step 3: The Tension of the Running Mat

The running mat is an elastic element that stretches a certain amount due to use. This means that the running mat needs to be re-tightened at regular intervals. If you get the impression that the treadmill is stalling or even slipping a little while running, it is time to check the tension of the running mat. To re-tighten the mat, please use the Allen key included in the delivery. On the back or end of the running deck, you will find an Allen screw on the left and right sides.

Tighten the Allen screw on your treadmill.

This screw allows you to pull the rear pulley backwards. To ensure that the treadmill stays centrally in the middle after re-tensioning, let the treadmill run at a low speed. To avoid tightening the running mat unnecessarily, start with a quarter turn of the Allen screw on the left and right. Now, watch the running mat to see if it stays centrally in the middle. If this is not the case and the mat is running in a certain direction, you need to tighten the Allen screw on that side again.

Step 4: Cleaning the engine compartment

During use, abrasion from the mat and the running shoe can collect in the motor compartment. To prevent this abrasion from causing overheating damage to the motor or the electrics, it is even more important that you clean the motor compartment regularly. For this step, you must unplug the treadmill from the mains/power supply. Please note that if your treadmill has a main switch, you must first turn off your treadmill and then remove the power plug. If your treadmill does not have a main switch, you must unplug the power plug directly. If it is unplugged, you can unscrew the motor cover.

Now vacuum the engine compartment carefully and at low power. Once you have successfully cleaned the engine compartment, put the engine cover back on and screw it tight.
